Experiments, investigations, and tests of web things

WordPress version 3.0

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve had a really good, serious, play with WordPress. runs on Tumblr and projects i’ve been involved with have used enterprise WCMS,  Joomla or a little WCMS called webCreator.

So, the beta blog gave me the idea chance to evaluate WP3 and at the same time give me a platform to experiment on the next time a WP project comes along.

Suffice to say, I’m really impressed. It’s come a long way with the krubrick themed blogging platform I dealt with a few years ago. In just 2 hours I’d set up an entire site, including the time needed for me to quickly research some of the “essential plugins” I needed.

Those plugins ended up being…

  • All in one SEO pack
  • Disqus comment system
  • Google Analytics for WordPress
  • Outbrain (for related & popular posts)
  • PC Robots.txt
  • Google XML sitemaps
  • TweetMeme Button

I’m had a bit of a problem with a one plugin, Google XML sitemaps. It’s failed constantly to install. Basically the first problem I’ve had. In the end I had to download the zip and install it manually.

Also included in those 2 hours are a couple of configuration tweaks some of which from Yoast’s page.

  • changing the format of permalink URLs
  • SEO adjustments (or page titles and the like) via All in one SEO

Next step is to try to create or locate a suitable theme.
